What is ICSE?
Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (abbreviated as CISCE) is a national level, private Board of School education in India.
- ICSE conducts the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and the Indian School Certificate (ISC) examinations for Class X and Class XII respectively
- It was established in 1958
- Before 1986, it was affiliated to the French Board Examination, a fact that gives it great credibility among foreign schools and universities
- ICSE and ISC exams are known for their extensive and voluminous syllabus
- Since the course structure lays heavy importance on giving equal attention to each subjects it demands that students develop an in-depth understanding and dedicate equal time to each of these subjects, including humanities
Affiliations
Guidelines for affiliations:
- The School must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the state government for affiliation of the school to the council.
- The school should be run by a registered society, trust or company registered under Section 25 (1)(a) of the Companies Act, 1956 and one of the principal purposes of the society, trust or company must be educational.
- Each school must have a properly constituted governing body and managing committee.
- The society, trust or company must be financially stable.
- The medium of instruction in the school must be English and the scheme of studies must be in accordance with the scheme laid down by the council for secondary and higher secondary stages.
- The staff must be qualified and trained in accordance with the qualifications prescribed by the council.
- There should be a compulsory provident fund scheme.
- The school infrastructure should be adequate for accommodating the numbers and gender of pupils attending the school.
- The playing fields and/or other facilities for extra-curricular and co-curricular activities must be adequate.
- The number of working days and hours should conform to those prescribed by the council from time to time.
- The Certificate of Land is a mandatory document to be submitted electronically in a prescribed format for provisional affiliation.
Examinations
The council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations conducts three examinations, namely, the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE – Class X); The Indian School Certificate (ISC – Class XII) and the Certificate in Vocational Education (CVE - Year 12).
ICSE (Class X)
The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education has been designed to provide an examination in a course of general education, in accordance with the recommendations of the New Education Policy, 1986, in English. Private candidates are not permitted to appear for this examination.
ISC (Class XII)
The Indian School Certificate Examination is an examination, in English, designed in accordance with the recommendations of the New Education Policy 1986, after a two-year course of studies beyond the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (Year 10) examination or its equivalent examination.
C.V.E (Year 12)
The Certificate of Vocational Education Examination (CVE - 12) has been created as an examination in accordance with the recommendations of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) through the Joint Council of Vocational Education (JCVE) established under the National Policy of Education, 1986. This examination can be taken by candidates after a two year course of studies beyond the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (Year 10) examination or its equivalent examination, in English.
