Courses Offered for Class 11
After Class 10, students can pick one of Arts, Commerce and Science streams. Science is often considered one of the most challenging yet promising streams. The main subjects in this stream are Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
In Class 11, students can pick four subjects from any of the below electives:
- Mathematics (For Engineering Aspirants)
- Physics (Compulsory for Science)
- Chemistry (Compulsory for Science)
- Biology (For Medical Aspirants)
- Computer Science
- Business Studies (Commerce)
- Accountancy (Commerce)
- Geography
- Economics (Commerce)
- Physical Education
With Engineering or Medicine in mind, the elective choices are further reduced to Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physical Education and Biology.
Here’s an article that will help you choose a stream after Class 10.
Co-scholastic Work
You need to participate in co-scholastic work as described by your board syllabus. This includes learning creative arts and indulging in social work. While this part of the curriculum is not graded, it is instrumental in shaping your character and morality, while nurturing your creativity.

- Olympiads: There are several Olympiads organized by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) such as IMO, NCO, NSO and IEO. These Olympiads are held annually and are considered very tricky for students.
- KVPY: Funded by the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India, the KVPY scholarship programme is held to attract and motivate students across the country to pursue basic science education and a career in research.
- JEE Main: This exam helps students secure admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs); as well as the dual degree programme of IIEST, Shibpur. It is conducted mostly between the first and second weeks of April.
- JEE Advanced: This exam helps students secure admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Only those students who clear JEE Main are eligible for appearing in JEE Advanced. Over 2,20,000 students clear JEE Main each year. The exam is conducted during the last week of May.
- BITSAT: The BITS Admission Test or BITSAT is a computer-based online exam that helps students secure admission to the Integrated Degree programmes of Birla Institute of Technology and Science at its Pilani, Hyderabad and Goa campuses. The online exam generally takes place between the second and third weeks of April.
- UPSEE: The U.P. State Entrance Examination is a state-level engineering examination in Uttar Pradesh. It is conducted during the third week of April.
- EAMCET: The Engineering Agricultural and Medical Common Entrance Test, commonly called as EAMCET, is an entrance examination that helps students secure admission to some engineering and medical colleges in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, India. Many other colleges offering graduation courses like B.D.S., B. Pharm., B.Sc., Pharm. D., B.E., B. Tech. etc. require qualification in this exam, which is conducted during the last week of May.
- MHT-CET: The Common Entrance Test is conducted by the Government of Maharashtra for admission to Full Time Degree Courses of Technical Education ( Engineering and Technology, Pharmacy and Pharm.D.). It generally takes place during the first week of May.
- COMEDK: COMEDK is a state-level entrance test, floated by the Associations of Medical, Dental and Engineering private colleges for admissions to member institutions. Post the announcement of the results, the first round of the counselling process is held according to the COMEDK counselling schedule.
- VITEEE: VIT University conducts the VIT Engineering Entrance Exam (VITEEE) to grant students admission to their various undergraduate engineering programmes. Admissions to its two campuses, in Chennai and Vellore, is purely on the basis of marks secured in the VITEEE exam.
- English: Practice the art of reading, speaking and writing. Expose yourself to English speaking situations and try to assimilate the information you receive. Develop good reading practice by reading novels, newspapers, books, etc. The best way to improve writing is to try and think in the language itself. If not, then it becomes a matter of translation. Listening to audio renditions of proses and poems helps too.
- Physics and Chemistry: Understanding basic ideas and concepts will help you in both board and engineering qualification exams. You need to work on problem solving with the intent of learning the idea. Laws and theorems can be learnt by heart. Pay attention in classes as it’s the only place you’ll be taught how to use scientific equipments.
- Biology: This subject is strenuous on the memory as concepts are basically pure information. You can approach Biology by trying to visualize the functions of the described phenomena and trying to correlate them with analogies that you’re familiar with. Give special attention to the names and spellings of the many biological terminologies.
- Maths: Maths is a practical subject. The best way to learn it is by practicing problems. Make sure you practice problem solving only after you’ve gained good confidence.
- Computer Science: This is another practical subject with a lot of history and logic. Understanding computer logic is the key to this subject. Programs need to be practiced. Just like Maths, no matter how well one understands logics or concepts, only practice will show you how to approach and solve a problem.
